Narikel Jinjira people had their own conservation declaration in 1987 to protect the island and natural resources. All the community elders made the declaration. Since then, the islanders continued their conservation efforts, started an a forestation program and achieved significant successes. VOICE was set up as a Public Trust in 1991 as a response to the needs of street children living in Mumbai. Voice's mission is "to reach out to vulnerable and neglected street children and, through education, enable them become whole human beings and self-reliant, responsible, contributing citizens." We believe in empowering street children with the gift of education that seeks to emulate Mahatma Gandhi's vision of "drawing out the best in the child - body, mind and spirit." VOICE reaches out to street children (ages3-14),currently at railway stations. The children learn the 3R's..reading,writing and arithmetic and also positive values of love, friendship and honesty through songs, games, stories and play-acting. In addition, they learn life skills such as responsibility, regularity, hard work, perseverance and a sense of duty and service. Vocational, income-generating skills taught include screen printing, tailoring, making stationary, computer literacy and decoration of diyas. These children are also taught how to save money in a bank! So far, 500 children have participated in various educational programs organized by VOICE. 125 are enrolled in Municipal/Private schools.

Society for Education, Empowerment and Development (SEED) is a non-denominational, not-for-profit organization which came into formal existence in October 1995. It comprises people from various walks of life, who have been directly or indirectly working for the upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden in and around Gujarat since the last seven to twenty years. The group came together specifically to address the issue of education, both formal and non-formal, in the educationally and socially deprived communities in Gujarat and come up with a socio-culturally specific and replicable model for interventions in these fields among these communities.
